DESPITE THE FEELINGS OF MANY MOVIEGOERS, ESPECIALLY OLDER ONES, THAT THERE ARE NO GOOD MOVIES BEING MADE, AWAY FROM HER (2007) GIVES THE LIE TO THIS CONTENTION. NOT ONLY IS IT ONE OF THE VERY BEST MOVIES OF THIS YEAR, BUT IT'S CLAIM FOR ACCOLADES GOES HIGHER. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS PERIOD, NO MATTER THE YEAR. JULIE CHRISTIE, NOW IN HER 60S, IS STILL ABSOLUTELY RAVISHING AND A MESMERIZING SCREEN PRESENCE. HERE SHE DOES ACADEMY AWARD WORK AS DOES HER CO-STAR, THE RELATIVELY UNKNOWN GORDON PINSENT. HE IS WITH HER EVERY SINGLE STEP OF THE WAY. OLYMPIA DUKAKIS AND MICHAEL MURPHY HAVE SMALL,SUPPORTING ROLES AND ARE FANTASTIC. MURPHY DOESN'T EVEN SPEAK A LINE AND YET YOU WON'T FORGET HIM. YES, THIS FILM IS A SERIOUS DRAMA WITH A HARD BUT UNSENTIMENTAL AND HONEST LOOK AT LIFE AND ITS LESSONS AND OUTCOMES,A MEDITATION NOT SO MUCH ON ALZHEIMERS AS IT HAS BEEN SOLD, BUT RATHER ON THE COMPLEXITIES OF LOVE AND LOSS. BUT IT IS SO WONDERFULLY WARM AND LIFE-AFFIRMING THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO FORGET WHEN ITS OVER. HOW MANY FILMS CAN EARN THAT CLAIM? AGAIN, WHATEVER THE YEAR? THE FILM IS BASED ON AN EXCELLENT STORY BY ALICE MUNRO ; AND EQUALLY TELLING AND TERRIFIC, IT HAS BEEN DIRECTED BY SARAH POLLEY, AN ACTRESS STILL IN HER 20S. HER GRASP AND UNDERSTANDING OF THIS FAR FROM EASY MATERIAL IS ASTONISHING AND GIVES ONE A LOT OF OPTIMISM AND HOPE ABOUT HER FUTURE FILM CAREER. THIS IS A CONTEMPORARY MOVIE--IN SO MANY WAYS--AND NOT TO BE MISSED.
