PEARCEAS -CHALLENGING GESNERIADS

Pearceas are very interesting gesneriads, but there is little in literature about them and they can be a great challenge to grow. I have tried several in outside situations, inside under lights and in terrariums. All grow well for a time, but eventually have problems that have been difficult to diagnose or get help with. Pearcea hypocrtiflora is one of the most beautiful of this genus or any gesneriad genus for that matter, but you have your work cut out in keeping it going. Over time, my attempts at this plant eventually met with failure. It looks terrific for long periods. Some sources report it will resprout after a rest period, but I did not find that to be the case and saved one pot for more than a year--living in forlorn hope.
